This Japanese blended whisky comes from both malt and grain. It’s distilled at Japan’s highest distillery, Mars Shinshu Distillery, founded by the Hombo family, located at 798 meters, in a mountain range of Nagano. The whisky is named after Kiichiro Iwai, known as “The Silent Pioneer of Japan Whisky,” and the former mentor of Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka and Suntory Whisky.

Iwai Tradition: Discover the Spirit of a Japanese Whisky Legend

Iwai Tradition isn’t just a Japanese whiskey; it’s a tribute to a pivotal figure in the nation’s whisky history – Kiichiro Iwai. A brilliant mind and skilled distiller, Iwai was the mentor of the legendary Masataka Taketsuru, often called the “Father of Japanese Whisky.” Unfortunately, Iwai’s whisky endeavors were ultimately interrupted, leaving behind a legacy of what could have been. Today, Iwai Tradition revives his spirit, carrying his name and dedication to quality forward.

The Soul of Iwai Tradition

Crafted at the Mars Shinshu Distillery, Iwai whisky celebrates the whisky Kiichiro Iwai envisioned. It’s a harmonious blend of malt and grain whiskies, aged in a thoughtful combination of bourbon, sherry, and wine casks. This meticulousness embodies Iwai’s original philosophy and pays homage to the diverse distilling styles he practiced.

The Iwai Whisky Tasting Experience

  • Nose: Honeyed sweetness, ripe pear, baked apple, a hint of toasted nuts, and gentle spice.
  • Palate: Silky and well-rounded, with flavors of dried fruit, vanilla, subtle sherry notes, and a touch of marzipan.
  • Finish: Warm and satisfying, with a lingering spice balanced by lingering sweetness.

Cocktails with Iwai Whiskey

Iwai Tradition’s accessible profile makes it ideal for exploring beyond sipping:

  • Classic Sour: Iwai Tradition, lemon juice, and simple syrup shine in this timeless cocktail, accented with a touch of egg white for added silkiness (optional).
  • Japanese Old Fashioned: Muddle a touch of brown sugar with bitters and orange peel, add Iwai, and enjoy its richness in this classic format.
  • Sherry Cobbler: Shake Iwai with sherry, fresh orange and seasonal berries, and a dash of simple syrup. Refreshing and sophisticated over crushed ice.

Why Iwai Whisky Stands Out

  • Historical Connection: Embodies the vision of a true Japanese whisky pioneer.
  • Blended Masterpiece: Showcases the art of harmonious blending for a balanced flavor profile.
  • Uncommon Blend: Incorporates corn whisky for a distinct and delightful complexity
  • Exceptional Value: Offers outstanding quality at a more accessible price point within the Japanese whisky sphere.
  • Cocktail Powerhouse: Its versatility elevates both simple and complex drinks.

The Legacy of Kiichiro Iwai Lives On

Today, Iwai Tradition ensures his dedication to quality and unwavering spirit endures. Whether savoring it neat to uncover its subtleties or exploring its playful side in cocktails, Iwai Tradition invites you to raise a glass to a true legend and his reimagined dream.
